International Technical Animal Rescue Working Group formed

Wellington SPCA Animal Rescue Unit founder Steve Glassey along with other international experts in technical animal rescue have been invited to form a new working group to develop new curriculum for Rescue 3's Animal Rescue Technician series.

Steve in conjunction with colleagues from the Wellington SPCA Animal Rescue Unit designed and piloted the Rescue 3 Pacific Animal Rescue Technician Programme earlier this year, adopted also by the Massey University Veterinary Emergency Response Team. Both VERT and the ARU were deployed to the devastating earthquake following the 22nd of February.

Other experts from the US including Rescue 3 and the University of Florida join Steve along with Rescue 3 Corporate Office to expand the Rescue 3 Pacific curriculum across the wider Rescue 3 International network. The new working group includes:

  • Todd Balogh, Instructor (Rope), Rescue 3 Pacific
  • Blair Hillyard, Wellington SPCA Animal Rescue Unit
  • Hayley Squance, VERT, Massey University
  • John Haven, University of Florida
  • Julie Munger, Instructor Trainer, Sierra Rescue

 

New resources including a revised manual will be introduced and planned for launch in 2012.

Steve is the longest serving Rescue 3 Instructor Trainer (Water & Rope) in Oceania and holds a Masters Degree in Emergency Management. He also sits on the National Animal Welfare Emergency Management Group (NAWEM), is the Co-convenor of the IAEM Animal Emergency Management Special Interest Group and has published in peer reviewed journals on animal emergency management.
