Mercalli Disaster Management Consulting is lead by Steve Glassey. It is the accumulation of his networks, knowledge and experience on the ground, complemented by a reputation for providing world-class personalised consultancy services in the areas of disaster management and technical rescue.
Steve's 15 years of commitment to the industry have seen him rise to positions such as Disaster Management Officer with the United Nations and Chief Executive of the Emergency Management Academy of New Zealand. In 2008 Steve was awarded the prestigious Certified Emergency Manager (CEM®) credential, by the International Association of Emergency Managers.
Steve also has been an Emergency Management Advisor with the Ministry of Civil Defence & Emergency Management (developing national urban search and rescue capacity) and Manager with the New Zealand Fire Service Professional Development Unit.
Steve's skills and experience in co-ordinating a disaster response are sought after internationally and he has assisted with events such as the recent Samoan Tsunami and Typhoon Katsana in South East Asia, both in 2009.
Steve's qualifications include a Master of Emergency Management, Postgraduate Certificate in Public Management, Graduate Diploma in Emergency Management from Massey University New Zealand and other national qualifications in adult education, business, urban search & rescue, specialist rescue, outdoor recreation, fire rescue services and health and safety.
Steve's passion for emergency management theory and practice sees him currently undertaking a Doctor of Philosophy in emergency management, part-time, with the Massey University Joint Centre for Disaster Research (JCDR). Steve also is the Massey Univesrity emergency management programme coordinator and teaches graduate level emergency management for Massey University part time, including papers 130.705 Emergency Management, 193.304 Animal Emergency Response, and 130.799 Research Report in Emergency Management.
He has delivered emergency management workshops and projects in the United Arab Emirates, Nepal, Indonesia, Laos, Philippines, Australia, Fiji, Samoa, Thailand and the USA, and has also assisted with humanitarian aid work in many of these countries.
Steve remains active in disaster response through being a register member of RedR and a member of the ADRA Pacific Emergency Response Team. Steve is also a CEM Commissioner for the International Association of Emergency Managers (Oceania-Asia CEM Commission).
